Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked gambling on different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The actual advancement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly play against each other. He was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
