Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only participant to make it to the last poker table in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a huge pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the best gamblers anywhere in the world. While playing online poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of $40, 000. Hansen frequently buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I know Gus is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is flat broke, he has absolutely no reason to settle at the table with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the min takes almost all of the expertise out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be 1 of the greatest players in the world but he can’t buy in for the total amount. I believe tv can skew our view of the real world every now and then. The best players anywhere in the world may be guys you have never heard of before.
